My Doctors think I am a crank regarding dietary things, but I had a serious illness that almost destroyed my health, I asked if my diet was a concern, but was told it had nothing whatsoever to do with the illness. My husband takes Statins, and lately I have been getting concerned about how tired he is, how breathless he is, and how forgetful he is becoming, but just put that down to advancing years. However reading by chance an article that says Statins can cause you to have dementia like symptoms, made me look at the whole thing again. The side effects of taking Statins are far worse than I had thought. The trouble is what do you put in its place. One reviewer bravely said she had had coronary bypass surgery and taking the Statins made her feel so bad that she stopped taking them, even though her doctor told her she would die without them. Her problem is muscle weakness and although the pain isn’t as bad the weakness is getting worse.

I suffered a minor heart attack when i was 53 years, due to the shock of finding my Mother had died unexpectedly during the night. I was put on Statins but found they gave me severe nausea, so refused to take them, but because I have low blood pressure, I felt I wasn’t at risk, even though my cholesterol is a little above what the Doctors want it to be. Today after reading and watching the videos about Statins, and I have included two videos so the argument isn’t just one-sided, I am so very thankful that I didn’t take the tablets. I take Lecithin instead, part of the Vitamin B group it acts like a detergent in the blood and breaks down the fat globules and so the blood slips through the blood vessels more easily.

The book, as far as i can tell from the excerpts that Amazon allow when you click on the image, is written in a storytelling way, but it does give you a program to help you to change. It also shows you the difference of complaining when there is something that is wrong and needs to be put right, or just complaining, as we do when it is raining, or we are miserable, tired, feeling low etc. From what i could tell the ways to help you change are fairly simple, but that is good, because most people can’t really change what is probably habitual thinking unless it is in small simple ways that don’t take too much time, or effort to implement. The previous post was about Dr Caroline Leaf and how negativity, fear and anxiety can cause serious health problems, and I just thought I would re-enforce that with another book that may also help you to change.

My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey

My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey is an amazing book written by Dr Jill Bolte Taylor describing exactly how it felt to have a stroke, a blood vessel exploded leaving a massive clot on the left cerebral hemisphere of Her Brain. But not only does she describe the effect having a stroke had on her in this book, she also describes how she fought her way back to health. Seeing in s very small way how having a minor stroke has left my husband with a slight speech impediment, I marvel at Dr Jill Boltes recovery, and you only have to watch the video to know that she has made a fully recovery. One reviewer states ‘Dr Bolte takes us on a tour of the mystical right side of her brain which little is known about, and says the right side of the brain is the gateway to enlightenment. Her tips on how to achieve Nirvana or Inner Peace by accessing the right side of the brain is worth the price of the book many times over.
The videos shown below are of her Shows with Oprah discussing the book and her experiences. I have shown the last three in a series of 12 as I felt that it was more significant in understanding the end rather than the beginning, mainly because on the sister website http://healthandfitness4you,net in the article about Dr Jill Bolte called Changing the Size of the Text I showed 2 videos showing Dr Jill Bolte explaining in great detail how the stroke occurred and what she felt when she had it, so thought for this post i would show the later videos with Oprah. I hope I have got this right and this is more helpful to whoever is reading this post.

I find this amazing, yet another affirmation to me of the enormous healing powers our bodies have, if we can only tap into the resources correctly. Dr Jill Bolte Taylor describes one way, and as a Bible believing Christian the Bible tells me there is ‘life and death’ in the tongue, and how Dr Bolte fought her way back to health proves in no uncertain way the veracity of these wonderful truths. It always delights me when a scientific mind, especially one trained in neuroscience, confirms, even if they don’t realise it, how the truths in the Bible can set a person free.

This is a very readable book, fortunately, as I find most books on subjects relating to health and healthy living can be dry and difficult to read or remember. I know most people really know that sleep deprivation is not good for us, I include myself in this category, but there is so much i want to do, and the only way I can make more time is to go to bed later. But, I ask myself, does not dragging myself through the day, mainly because I haven’t had enough sleep, slow me down? I would probably achieve far more if i did get to bed earlier, and that is why I am posting this book to day, hopefully it will help others to become more disciplined if they really understand the effects of sleep deprivation on their health, fitness and wellbeing.

I have learned, sadly by experience, that diet supplements don’t work long term, and usually have awful side effects, so I leave them well alone. My husband is a gardener by desire, if he could have had his own way he would have been a self-sufficient small holder. However we have a reasonable size vegetable plot and we eat our own produce for about 5 months of the year, literally picked off the vine and into the pot. The food has a totally different flavour from the stuff one buys at the super market. We know that the soil is well nourished as we use our own compost and we know what goes into it. We are totally organic and we definitely feel better by the time we have finished eating the garden. But it is hard work, and my husband who is in his mid seventies finds each year that it is harder to do his vegetable patch. One day we will have to leave our garden, and it will be a very sad day for us when that happens.

But it isn’t the whole picture, it is also considered that sugar and that includes grains as they turn to sugar in the body also pulls down the immune system, and this is my problem, even though i know that gluten, found in various grains, is very bad for me, I find it hard to eliminate it from my diet. I have reduced the intake as much as i can, but total elimination, even though i know it will help me, is a step too far.
